WHY I CHANGED THE WAY I WALK DOGS
When I first started dog walking, my walks probably looked much like you’d expect.I’d collect the dogs and head out to explore the local parks, woodland and trails around Camberley and Frimley.But as GeoPaws evolved, so did the way I thought about group dog walking.Eventually, I made a pretty big decision: I stopped offering traditional public group walks altogether.Today, GeoPaws group adventures take place exclusively in a private, secure 2.5-acre field.Not because walking dogs in public is inherently bad — but because I realised there was a different way I wanted to do it.
MORE FREEDOM, WITH LESS RISK.
One of the biggest challenges when walking dogs professionally is balancing freedom with safety.Some absolutely lovely dogs have unreliable recall. Others have a high prey drive and will disappear after a squirrel given half a chance. Some become overexcited when they spot another dog.And even when the dogs you’re walking are beautifully behaved, you can’t control everything around you — unfamiliar dogs approaching, wildlife, cyclists, traffic or other distractions.In a secure field, that changes.The dogs can run, sniff, explore and play without me constantly having to restrict that freedom because of what might be around the corner.
SECURE FIELDS AREN’T JUST FOR DOGS WITH POOR RECALL
There’s sometimes an assumption that secure fields are only for dogs who can’t be trusted off lead.But that’s only a small part of it.Some dogs find busy public spaces overwhelming. Some become frustrated when they’re restricted on a lead around other dogs. Others simply thrive when they have space to move, sniff and interact naturally without constantly encountering unfamiliar dogs and people.A secure field gives me much more control over the environment and allows me to carefully match the dogs in each group.That means GeoPaws can provide the social side of a group walk, while keeping the environment more predictable and structured.
It isn’t about shutting dogs away from the world. It’s about creating the right environment for them to enjoy their walk.
WHAT A GEOPAWS WALK ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE
Every GeoPaws adventure starts at your dog’s front door.I collect each dog from home and transport them securely to our private 2.5-acre field in Frimley Green.Once there, the dogs have a full hour to run, sniff, explore, socialise and just be dogs.Groups are carefully matched rather than simply putting as many dogs together as possible. I consider things like size, play style, confidence and personality when deciding which dogs will enjoy walking together.The field gives us plenty of space for natural movement and play, while I also use things like scatter feeding, scent work and recall practice to keep the dogs engaged.Afterwards, everyone is safely transported home again usually considerably more tired than when I collected them.
The aim isn’t simply to exercise dogs. It’s to give them a safe, enjoyable outlet for the things dogs naturally want to do.
